L'Atlas is a Parisian artist born in 1978. Fascinated by handwriting from a very young age, he went to different Arab countries in the 1990s to study calligraphy. In France, he began to develop his art of graffiti, which he combined with his passion for writing.
The balance between form and letter has been at the heart of his practice ever since. His works take as their starting point the artist's signature – The Atlas, which he adapts in a thousand ways. From the 2000s, he favored the gaffer, with which he traced his name on different supports, such as canvases, sidewalks or building facades. The Atlas creates a meandering alphabet which, anchored in the city, invites us to question the universality of language and the limits of the illegible.
This monograph presents the numerous variations of the artist's codified language. Between optical art, abstraction, street art, pop art and minimalism, the artistic creation of L'Atlas shows its multiple facets.
